چکیده
Rising energy costs have spawned renewed interest in improving methodologies for the synthesis, design and/or retrofitting of separation rocesses. It is well known that energy use in many process industries is dominated by separation tasks—particularly distillation. In this work, the hortest stripping line approach recently proposed by Lucia, Amale, & Taylor (2006) is used to find minimum energy requirements in distillation. he new aspects of this work show that this shortest stripping line approach can find minimum energy requirements for

Non-pinched, minimum energy distillation designs
Non-pinched, minimum energy solutions are important class of distillation designs that offer the potential advantage of a better trade-off between capital investment and operating costs. In this paper, two important tasks associated with non-pinched distillation designs are studied. Thus the novel contributions of this work to the literature are (1) A comprehensive methodology for finding non-p...
متن کاملSynthesis, Design and Retrofitting of Energy Efficient Separation Processes
A new methodology for the synthesis, design and retrofitting of energy efficient separation processes that is based on the concept of shortest separation lines is presented. The basic theory of shortest distillation lines, formulated as a nonlinear programming problem, is given. Two examples are presented that show that energy efficient separations correspond to shortest stripping lines – even ...
متن کاملClosed-loop Implementation of Optimal Trajectories in Batch Distillation
In order to implement a quasi-optimal trajectory derived from pinch theory [1,2], a temperature tracking control system composed by an open-loop reflux ratio control plus a closed-loop correction for disturbance rejection is proposed. To adjust the closed-loop controller we use the referential dynamic reaction of the process [3] and tuning rules [4] that, though they were originally developed f...
متن کاملShortcut Methods for the Design of Heteroazeotropic Distillation of Multicomponent Mixtures
Shortcut methods are valuable tools in the early stages of chemical process design, where numerous flowsheet alternatives need to be evaluated to determine the most energy-efficient, feasible flowsheet. Various shortcut methods based on tray-to-tray calculation and pinch point analysis for the inspection of feasibility and the determination of the minimum energy demand (MED) for homogeneous non...
متن کاملSimulation of Ethanol Extractive Distillation with Mixed Glycols as Separating Agent
Extractive distillation is an alternative for ethanol dehydration processes that has been shown to be more effective than azeotropic distillation and, in close proximity, to be very competitive against the process that uses adsorption with molecular sieves. Glycols have been shown to be the most effective solvents in extractive distillation, mainly ethylene glycol and glycerol. In this work, an...
